Dear Family of Mary!

Day 5 of our novena to Our Lady, Help of Christians, for her intentions:

“Love is not irritable or resentful.” (1 Cor 13:5)

When we are irritable it usually is because we have begun to think too much about ourselves and not enough about the other. We begin to see the little inconveniences of our day as trouble aimed at us to make us unhappy, instead of seeing them as little crosses we can embrace with love for the sake of those who cause them.

And resentment is a poison that flows from lack of forgiveness. When we resent, we judge the other, and decide we cannot let go of the harm they have caused. Then we begin to exude the poison of unforgiven wrongs that festers in our hearts. This poison destroys all peace and love.

Our Lady has called us to forgiveness and to peace and love. Here are two messages:

“Dear Children! Today I invite you to decide for peace. Pray that God give you the true peace. Live peace in your hearts and you will understand, dear children, that peace is the gift of God. Dear children, without love you cannot live peace. The fruit of peace is love and the fruit of love is forgiveness. I am with you and I invite all of you, little children, that before all else forgive in the family and then you will be able to forgive others. Thank you for having responded to my call.” January 25, 1996

“Dear children! Today I call you to comprehend that without love you cannot comprehend that God needs to be in the first place in your life. That is why, little children, I call you all to love, not with a human but with God’s love. In this way, your life will be more beautiful and without an interest. You will comprehend that God gives Himself to you in the simplest way out of love. Little children, so that you may comprehend my words which I give you out of love, pray, pray, pray and you will be able to accept others with love and to forgive all who have done evil to you. Respond with prayer; prayer is a fruit of love towards God the Creator. Thank you for having responded to my call.” September 25, 1997

With forgiveness and peace, we can begin to build a new life, a life made of love! When we love God first, then all our other relationships and personal problems fall into place. They make sense when God is first. They fit into His divine plan of love. They become vehicles of that love. Our family members become the ones who help us to be like Jesus, to love like Him, and to give like He gives. Then life is beautiful. May we become more and more like Jesus!!!

Day 5

“Love is not irritable or resentful.” (1 Cor 13:5)

Prayer to Mary Help of Christians

O Mary, You love me with a Mother’s heart.
Just as you held your son Jesus in your arms, you hold me in your care.
Help me in my need;
protect me day by day;
and through your Motherly intercession,
may I become ever more aware of the breath of God living within me.
Mary, Help of Christians, Pray for us. Amen

Dear Family of Mary!

“Dear children! Today in a special way I invite you all to prayer and renunciation. For now as never before satan wants to show the world his shameful face by which he wants to seduce as many people as possible onto the way of death and sin. Therefore, dear children, help my Immaculate Heart to triumph in the sinful world. I beseech all of you to offer prayers and sacrifices for my intentions so I can present them to God for what is most necessary. Forget your desires, dear children, and pray for what God desires, and not for what you desire. Thank you for having responded to my call.” (September 25, 1991)

This is Day 4 in our Novena to Mary, Help of Christians. Our Scripture is: “Love does not insist on its own way” (1 Cor 13:5). We are praying for Our Lady’s intentions in this novena. Surely is takes self-control and love to pray for Our Lady’s intentions instead of our own. It is a powerful way to not insist on our own way. The message from September 25, 1991 is particularly appropriate for this day as well: “Forget your desires, dear children, and pray for what God desires, and not for what you desire.”

In our families and personal relationships it is always a challenge to not insist on our own way. There are many opportunities in daily life which help us to practice love in this way. How we do the dishes, where we hang our coats, who drives and who doesn’t, what we will eat for dinner, who mows the lawn…well you see, there are many moments in our day that can become acts of love if we do not insist on our own way.

Not insisting on our own way is an act of letting go control. It says, I entrust my life to God and to you. It says that our relationship is more important than my sense of order. And learning not to insist on our own way can be good training for us in our relationship with the Lord. We can be more easily led by the Holy Spirit if we are not intent on control over the details of our lives.

“Dear children! Today I call you, through prayer and sacrifice, to prepare yourselves for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Little children, this is a time of grace and so, again, I call you to decide for God the Creator. Allow Him to transform and change you. May your heart be prepared to listen to, and live, everything which the Holy Spirit has in His plan for each of you. Little children, allow the Holy Spirit to lead you on the way of truth and salvation towards eternal life. Thank you for having responded to my call.” (May 25, 1998)

The Holy Spirit can lead us on the way of salvation, step by step. He has a plan! But He will have an easier time implementing it, if we have learned to not insist on our own way!! And the key to this way of relating is love. It is love for God that will help us put our way second to His way. It is love for God that will give us the desire to not insist on our own way! Just think how much better it will be when we are able to be led by the Holy Spirit! Think how powerful it could be if the Holy Spirit could have His way!

May our hearts be prepared to listen and to live what the Spirits says to us!

PS. There are terrible floods raging in Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia. It seems they are not occurring near Medjugorje, but the entire country will be suffering from this calamity. Let’s pray for the areas being flooded, and do whatever we can to help them in their need.

St. Pius V

Dear Family of Mary!

“Dear children! Open your hearts to the grace which God is giving you through me, as a flower that opens to the warm rays of the sun. Be prayer and love for all those who are far from God and His love. I am with you and I intercede for all of you before my Son Jesus, and I love you with immeasurable love. Thank you for having responded to my call.” (April 25, 2014)

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Pius V, the Pope of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Pope Pius V rallied the Christian faithful of Europe to withstand the invasion of the Turks by praying the Rosary. On October 7, 1571, there was a decisive battle at sea that destroyed the Turkish fleet, sending them limping home. Europe was saved. Pope Pius V believed it was praying the Rosary that turned the tide, through the intercession of Our Lady. He declared October 7 the Feast of the Holy Rosary. He also gave Our Lady the title of Our Lady of Victory and referred to her as “Help of Christians”.

It seems that we need to have the same confidence in Our Lady and the prayer of the Rosary in these days. The future hangs in the balance now. Victory will come through the Rosary, as Sr. Lucia of Fatima has said. It helps to pray with confidence. These two prayers below may help us to stir up our courage and faith in our Mother, Our Lady of Victory!

Prayer to Our Lady, Help of Christians

Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christian,
how sweet it is to come to your feet
imploring your perpetual help.
If earthly mothers cease not to remember their children,
how can you, the most loving of all mothers forget me?
Grant then to me, I implore you,
your perpetual help in all my necessities,
in every sorrow, and especially in all my temptations.
I ask for your unceasing help for all who are now suffering.
Help the weak, cure the sick, convert sinners.
Grant through your intercessions many vocations to the religious life.
Obtain for us, O Mary, Help of Christians,
that having invoked you on earth we may love and eternally thank you in heaven.

(St. John Bosco)
