Tuesday of Holy Week

Dear Family of Mary!

“Dear children! I am calling you to be with me in prayer in this time of grace when darkness is fighting against the light. Pray, little children, confess and begin a new life in grace. Decide for God and He will lead you towards holiness; and the cross will be a sign of victory and hope for you. Be proud that you are baptized and grateful in your heart that you are a part of God’s plan. Thank you for having responded to my call.” (March 25, 2018)

I believe that this message is a call to battle. Our Lady is calling us to join her in the fight against the darkness:

“Dear children! I am calling you to be with me in prayer in this time of grace when darkness is fighting against the light…”

She says to us: “be with me in prayer.”

Prayer is the battle ground in our day. The Rosary is the preferred weapon in this battle. But how often do we realize that we are called to pray WITH Our Lady? To pray our Rosary WITH her?

It seems to me that I am more often praying TO Our Lady. I am asking her for this and that, interceding for those I am concerned about, those who need her help. But to pray WITH Our Lady? Not usually on my radar.

Yet she asks us to pray WITH her!! She made this request in another message from December 2, 2012:

My children, help me in my motherly battle and pray with me that sinners may become aware of their sins and repent sincerely. Pray also for those whom my Son has chosen and consecrated in His name. Thank you.” 12/02/12

She asked us then to help her in her motherly battle and pray with her for sinners. We see that praying with Mary means to join her in her intercession, in her intentions, for what she sees is most important at this time. To pray with Mary is to be united in heart with her and put her in charge of our prayer. To be with her in her prayer!!!

This idea of praying with Mary reminds me of a couple of moments in Scripture. One is at the foot of the Cross, when Our Lady was locked in deep suffering, united with Jesus, but she was not alone. There were women with her, and John. They were praying WITH Mary! They were joining her prayer in that terrible and incredible moment when Jesus was saving us all. What must it have been like to pray WITH Mary at the foot of the Cross where our salvation was won? Maybe we can think about that on Good Friday.

Another moment was the Upper Room, where the Apostles had gathered after Jesus ascended into Heaven. Our Lady was there, praying. And the Apostles were praying WITH her. They were part of her prayer. And look what happened to the Apostles on Pentecost! They were inundated with the Holy Spirit! That is also what happens when we pray WITH Mary.

So, let’s try to respond to her request during this powerful time of Holy Week and Easter. Let’s pray WITH Mary. Let’s realize that this is a time when the darkness is fighting against the light, and join Mary’s prayer. Because it is her prayer that will defeat the enemy, not our puny prayers. She is the one who has been set at enmity with the Devil. She is the one who will crush his head. Her prayer will defeat the darkness Let’s pray WITH Our Lady, united with her in love and devotion, in consecration to her. Let’s pray WITH Mary!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Dear Deacon John,

The largest (and, in many places, the coldest) Lenten 40 Days for Life campaign so far has ended. Thank you for helping save so many lives!

We have a big event coming up to share the life-saving results … so watch your email this week for details!

Reports are still coming in … but local 40 Days for Life leaders tell us that as of now, they’re aware of …

… 490 babies in 354 locations around the world whose mothers have rejected abortion and chosen life!

In many cases, all it took was the simple act of showing up to pray on the sidewalk.

Cincinnati, Ohio

A woman outside the Planned Parenthood abortion center told 40 Days for Life participants in Cincinnati that she is pregnant … and a Christian.

“She’d had an abortion before and said she would never do that again,” a volunteer related, “but she didn’t know what else to do. So she scheduled an abortion … and paid the deposit.”

But thankfully, she saw people praying at the vigil … and went back to Planned Parenthood to get her deposit back. The volunteers then walked with her to the pregnancy help center about two blocks away, where she was greeted with open arms and life-affirming options.

Mary, the Cincinnati leader, said that although this woman was aware deep down that abortion was the wrong choice, without 40 Days for Life volunteers present, “she might not have known there was any place that could help her … and may have rescheduled the abortion.”

image

Boston, Massachusetts

As a small group prayed outside Planned Parenthood in Boston, a woman walked out of the building … and over to them.

“She was beaming, radiant with joy,” said one of the vigil participants, “and just had to share her good news that she was keeping her child and not going to have an abortion!”

The woman thanked them profusely, saying “she was grateful to all of us for being there!”

She got into the car that had arrived to pick her up … but rolled down the window and continued thanking the 40 Days for Life participants.

“I am trying to give you a sense of her joy,” said the volunteer who related this story. “I do think her decision to keep her child was in some very real way an answer to all of our prayers and prayerful presence.”

Memphis, Tennessee

“It was abortion day at Planned Parenthood,” said Kathy in Memphis.

“It is always heartbreaking seeing the ladies leave,” she said. “The look on their faces is that of horror, shock, pain … and deep sadness.”

Occasionally, though, there are signs of hope. Two women went in for ultrasound exams. When the first one left Planned Parenthood, she called out, “This place is awful! I won’t go back!”

She chose life for her baby!

The second woman then left … and showed volunteers the image of her 13-week-old baby. “She had four kids,” Kathy said, “but she said ‘no’ to five. She is in a crisis.”

This mom doesn’t want to have an abortion, but feels like she must. “We exchanged numbers,” Kathy said. Please pray for her. “We will send God’s Word … and offer her hope.”

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. On this rock I will build my church; the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

— Matthew 16:18

Father, we have done battle with the power of evil, and therefore we can have compassion on those still within its grip. We have been freed from the kingdom of darkness, and therefore we can bear witness to your Kingdom of Light. May the witness of all your people through these 40 Days for Life bear abundant fruit.

The Medjugorje Deception
A Shocking New Revelation

Denis Nolan

Almost since it commenced over three decades ago, the Medjugorje phenomenon has lived under a cloud. There were two competing narratives “explaining” it.

From the beginning, you had the obvious, straightforward narrative: the Blessed Virgin Mary was appearing to six children (now adults) following a pattern found in famous apparitions of the past. The appearances were longer than usual but then again the “need” was greater than ever before. The visionaries never retracted or contradicted their testimonies over the decades – a salient fact given the traumatic, continuing attacks on them. They were clinically tested during the “ecstasies” and found to be “normal.” The site of the apparitions itself drew millions of pilgrims, believers and unbelievers, laity and clerics. Countless conversions, a variety of miracles and continuous confessions and Masses made it a spiritual center of gravity in the wasteland that was the West. This was why the famed exorcist Fr. Gabriel Amorth called Medjugorje “a fortress against Satan.” It was also why St. John Paul II and St. Mother Teresa both became strong believers in the authenticity of Our Lady’s apparitions there.

But then a counter-narrative emerged: the children were lying; they were tools of the rebellious Franciscans who used them to undermine their bishop; they were simply seeking to personally enrich themselves. It was all a fraud. The power of a narrative depends on its source. And in this case the source was formidable. It was the Ordinary of the diocese in which the phenomenon was taking place, the local bishop. And concerning the authenticity of apparitions, in Church history it was always the local bishop who had the last word.

Not surprisingly, the Catholic media and most traditionalist Catholics gravitated to the Bishop’s counter-narrative. Bishop Zanic, the bishop of Mostar, the diocese in which Medjugorje was located, said he believed in the apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes and Fatima but not in Medjugorje. Medjugorje, he said, was not only fraudulent but likely to undermine other authentic apparitions. It was the word of the duly authorized Church leader against that of a clutch of unknown children in a remote region. The pilgrims kept coming but the traditionalists used the multitude of “facts” supplied by the Bishop to create elaborate critiques and refutations of the authenticity of the apparitions. Others among the faithful who were impressed by the phenomenon decided to remain neutral given the controversy. After all, where there’s smoke there’s fire. There’s two sides to every story. And the Bishop was giving his side.

Yet, discerning observers could have seen that things were not quite so black and white. For the Holy See had removed Medjugorje from the jurisdiction of the local bishop – a first in Church history. It should have been obvious that the Vatican did not trust him to do a fair job. It was not clear why. But the local bishop was no longer “in charge” when it came to Medjugorje. This did not stop Bishop Zanic and his successor Bishop Ratko Peric from continuing their war against Medjugorje and its principals. Even with the Vatican taking over the investigation and approving the authenticity of the first seven apparitions, the cloud created and sustained by the local bishop remained in place casting a baleful glance on every positive pronouncement. The Bishop’s drumbeaters among the traditionalists churned out stories, pamphlets and books promoting his counter-narrative and turning Medjugorje into a source of division among Catholics everywhere.

This, we might say, is the status quo. But everything just changed in 2018.

Shocking new revelations have vaporized the foundations of the counter-narrative. Previously classified government documents and high-level communist government witnesses have been brought into the light of day. And they tell us an “untold story” that is alternately appalling and infuriating. Bishop Zanic and Bishop Peric, according to the documents and witnesses, were working not just with the communist government of Yugoslavia but the Soviet Union’s KGB to destroy Medjugorje. Bishop Zanic changed his initially favorable stance on Medjugorje because the communists had incriminating information on him and in return for their silence he led the assault on the phenomenon. Bishop Peric (who was also given this information) asked the KGB to destroy Medjugorje even if it was true because of his animosity for the Franciscans. The traditionalists who “bought” the bishops’ counter-narrative were simply dupes peddling communist propaganda. Worst of all, the faithful who “fell” for the propaganda were deprived of a source of grace.

The whole sordid story with copies of the documents and the testimonies of KGB and Yugoslavian secret service agents can be found at https://www.medjugorje-to-fatima.com?wix-vod-video-id=6dd1b0ec26c448a487b098ac50150e7e&wix-vod-comp-id=comp-iwccusfc# .. Younger viewers of today may have a hard time imagining the state of the world in 1981 when the events of Medjugorje began. But it was a time when totalitarian communism and the Soviet Union, a global super-power, dominated Eastern Europe. This included Yugoslavia where Medjugorje was then located. The Soviets and the Yugoslavs rightly guessed that Medjugorje represented a mortal threat to their hegemony. They guessed this almost from the beginning – a prophetic insight we might say. So they did all in their power to end it.

The KGB and the Yugoslavs worked with high-level Vatican officials who promised to help them in this mission but then complained that Pope John Paul II was frustrating their efforts (remember that the assassination attempt on this Pope was engineered, according to many intelligence assessments, by the KGB). As in all communist countries, potential enemies of the regime were always under surveillance. This included bishops. In this manner, they were able to assemble incriminating information on Bishop Zanic which would have led to his dismissal and humiliation if publicized. The Vatican officials were, in fact, aware of this information as was Bishop Zanic’s successor Bishop Peric. In return for Bishop Zanic’s zealous efforts to exterminate Medjugorje, the communists kept their promise of silence. Meanwhile they cultivated Peric who won from them the promise to destroy the Franciscans whom he considered his enemies. In return, he said he would continue the war on Medjugorje specifically saying that he would do so whether or not there was truth to it.

So this is how the counter-narrative emerged. It was no different than the way in which the communists through the East German Secret Service built a false but powerful counter-narrative about Pope Pius XII alleging that he turned a deaf ear to the Holocaust. This was the Pope who was thanked by the Chief Rabbi of Rome at the end of World War II for saving thousands of Jewish lives. But such is the power of counter-narratives created by repressive regimes and peddled by gullible media that today there is a cloud over the head of this holy and heroic pope.

The Medjugorje deception created and sustained by ecclesiastical officials and directed by enemies of the Church has now been exposed. To his enduring credit, for which we should be ever grateful, St. John Paul II, who personally knew how the communists operated, protected Medjugorje. Let us express our gratitude too to the visionaries who have remained faithful to the mission entrusted to them by Our Lady in the face of slander from their own shepherd, who they continued praying for and never criticized.

It is now the mission of the faithful to help the Church recover and respond to the invitation from Our Lady being offered through Medjugorje:

“Dear children! Today I call you to pray and fast for my intentions, because Satan wants to destroy my plan. Here I began with this parish and invited the entire world. Many have responded, but there is an enormous number of those who do not want to hear or accept my call. Therefore, you who have said ‘yes’, be strong and resolute. Thank you for having responded to my call.

The Pope of the secret of Fatima told us in his will, “Victory when it comes, will be a victory through Maria!” He had prophetic vision, telling American bishops when addressing the Philadelphia Eucharistic Congress five years before Our Lady’s apparitions began: “We are now standing in the face of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has ever experienced. I do not think that wide circles of American Society, or wide circles of the Christian Community realize this fully. We are now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-church, between the Gospel and the anti-gospel, between Christ and the antichrist. This confrontation lies within the plans of Divine Providence. It is, therefore, in God’s Plan, and is a trial which the Church must take up, and face courageously…”Five years later Our Lady started coming to Medjugore:

“Dear children, my real, living presence among you should make you happy because this is the great love of my Son. He is sending me among you so that, with a motherly love, I may grant you safety!”

It made Pope John Paul ll happy. He recognized Our Lady’s presence with us through her apparitions in Medjugorje as part of God’s plan, writing to friends in Poland, in his own hand: “I thank Sophia for everything concerning Medjugorje. I too go there every day as a pilgrim in my prayers. I unite in my prayers with all those who pray there or receive a call for prayer from there. Today we have understood this call better. I rejoice that our time is not lacking people of prayer and apostles.” He told friends, “Medjugorje is hope for the entire world,” and visiting bishops to the Vatican: “Medjugorje is the spiritual center of the world!”

As we enter Holy Week, let us take seriously our Mother’s call to pray for the shepherds:

“My children, be my apostles who have not lived in vain. Do not forget that you will come before the Heavenly Father and tell Him about yourself. Be ready! Again I am warning you, pray for those whom my Son called, whose hands He blessed and whom He gave as a gift to you. Pray, pray, pray for your shepherds…

“It is necessary to pray much, to pray and love the Church to which you belong. Now, the Church is suffering and needs apostles who by loving unity, by witnessing and giving, show the ways to God. The Church needs apostles who by living the Eucharist with the heart do great works; it needs you, my apostles of love. My children, from the very beginning the Church was persecuted and betrayed, but day by day it grew. It is indestructible because my Son gave it a heart – the Eucharist, and the light of His Resurrection shone and will continue to shine upon it. Therefore, do not be afraid. Pray for your shepherds that they may have the strength and the love to be bridges of salvation. Thank you.”

Dear Friends,
I am writing you today from Harare, Zimbabwe where I am on mission with Dr. Brian Clowes, Mr. Emil Hagamu and HLI’s local affiliate. Our mission has been very fruitful because of your prayers and support; however, because of poor catechesis, corruption, economic hardships and decades of “colonization of the mind”, there is a tremendous need for pro-life evangelization. Life and family are under siege and suffer under the deceptive weight of the contraceptive mentality. Several mission programs revealed how systemic the problem is and the level to which the government and eighty population control groups will go to sustain their agenda. Numerous times we heard, “We need contraception to solve the issues of poverty… We are very poor and cannot afford children.” I will provide more about this mission in upcoming columns. But to the International Day of the Unborn.
Meanwhile, as we prepare to enter these most solemn of days, please join me in prayer for the people of Zimbabwe and the universal Church, for there is no place where Life and family are not struggling. Today, we usually celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation, which offers us opportunity to contemplate the gift of the Incarnation – the Healer of human nature – and Mary’s trust in the will of God.
When St. Pope John Paul II released his extraordinary pro-life encyclical, Evangelium Vitae, he fittingly did so on March 25 – the Feast of the Annunciation. On this feast, the Universal Church celebrates two great mysteries: 1) The moment when the Godhead first took on human flesh, and became incarnate within the womb of Mary, and, 2) Mary’s fiat, her free, total act of trust in God, by means of which she became Theotokos, “Mother of God,” and thereby the instrument by which God brought about His plan of salvation for the whole human race.
Each of these mysteries has enormous, direct relevance on our struggle to protect all human life. This, undoubtedly, is why St. Pope John Paul II encouraged the growth of the celebration of March 25 as the “International Day of the Unborn.” I hope you will join me in celebrating, using some of the suggestions mentioned at the end of this column . . .
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Dear Deacon John,

We’ve heard the story so many times.

“If only someone had been there,” a mother will say, “I may have never gone in for my abortion.”

If only …

What if …

It might have been different.

For 40 days, you’ve been there. For 40 days, you’ve made a difference.

image

We have many reports that just the sight of people peacefully, quietly praying outside the abortion center was all it took to make women stop, turn around and leave without having an abortion.

40 Days for Life may be ending … but the need continues. Why not make plans to pray at your local abortion center regularly? Many do so once a month, or once a week.

There are still women pondering abortion. All they need is someone to be there. Someone … like you!

image
image

Lawndale, California

It was raining when 40 Days for Life volunteers noticed a woman walking slowly towards the entrance of the building.

They asked if she had an appointment for an abortion. She said “yes” … and burst into tears.

She was pregnant with her fifth child and felt overwhelmed. She said she didn’t believe in abortion and didn’t want to do it … yet there she was. Her husband said it was solely her decision – and her burden.

The volunteer said she also had five children … and number 5 was there with her! She showered the woman with words of encouragement … gave her helpful information … and told her it was okay to get back in her car and go home.

“The woman was relieved and smiled as she reached her car,” said Laura in Lawndale. “She just needed someone to tell her that it was okay to keep the child … and that she could do it!”

image

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

“The weather was cold enough to chill the bones,” said Dan in Milwaukee, “but those that went out earlier must have warmed up the sidewalks with their prayer!”

He spoke to a young woman who was on her way out of the abortion center. “I inquired about her baby and she said her baby was doing well and she was leaning toward parenting her child,” he said.

When asked if this was her first child, she shook her head “no.” Dan responded, “Then you already know how special this child is in God’s eyes, unique and never to be repeated again.”

As soon as Dan mentioned God, she began to cry. “I’ve seen these tears before,” he said. “These were tears of the peace one experiences when submitting to God’s will.”

She then said, “You’re right. I choose life. I can’t do that to my baby.”

“I gave her some pro-life literature and my card and told her to call me if she ever needed any help whatsoever,” Dan said. “She shook my hand and said thank you.”

All she needed was for someone to be there.

image

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”

— Revelation 21:4-5

Father, you are the God of hope. Your word fills us with the vision of the world to come, when every tear will be wiped away, and death will be no more. Father, how we need that hope, how we are strengthened by that vision! Keep our hearts focused on heaven, and diligent in the labors of earth. As we struggle against the culture of death, root our souls in the assurance of victory.
