“The future of humanity passes by way of the family” (St. JPII)

December 30, 2016
Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

Dear Family of Mary!

“Dear children! With great joy, today I am carrying my Son Jesus to you, for Him to give you His peace. Open your hearts, little children, and be joyful that you can receive it. Heaven is with you and is fighting for peace in your hearts, in the families and in the world; and you, little children, help with your prayers for it to be so. I bless you with my Son Jesus and call you not to lose hope; and for your gaze and heart to always be directed towards Heaven and eternity. In this way, you will be open to God and to His plans. Thank you for having responded to my call.” (December 25, 2016)

As we approach the New Year, we can take time to meditate on Our Lady’s words to us. She is guiding us into the future with her gentle wisdom. And today, as we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, it seems important to understand her words: “Heaven is with you and is fighting for peace in your hearts, in the families and in the world; and you, little children, help with your prayers for it to be so.” Our Lady knows how desperately we need peace. Peace in our own hearts: because they are tormented by sin and sadness, because they are divided and lost. Peace in our families: because they too are tormented by division and woundedness. Peace in the world: because the state of the world is only an extension of the state of the family.

St. John Paul II said once: “The future of humanity passes by way of the family” (Familiaris Consortio, n86). Everywhere today we can see the effect of our broken families. On this day when we celebrate the Holy Family, we must ask them to guide us into that peace which only Jesus can give us.

St. John Paul II gave us this prayer at the end of Familiaris Consortio:

And now, at the end of my pastoral message, which is intended to draw everyone’s attention to the demanding yet fascinating roles of the Christian family, I wish to invoke the protection of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

Through God’s mysterious design, it was in that family that the Son of God spent long years of a hidden life. It is therefore the prototype and example for all Christian families. It was unique in the world. Its life was passed in anonymity and silence in a little town in Palestine. It underwent trials of poverty, persecution and exile. It glorified God in an incomparably exalted and pure way. And it will not fail to help Christian families-indeed, all the families in the world-to be faithful to their day-to-day duties, to bear the cares and tribulations of life, to be open and generous to the needs of others, and to fulfill with joy the plan of God in their regard.

St. Joseph was “a just man,” a tireless worker, the upright guardian of those entrusted to his care. May he always guard, protect and enlighten families.

May the Virgin Mary, who is the Mother of the Church, also be the Mother of “the Church of the home.” Thanks to her motherly aid, may each Christian family really become a “little Church” in which the mystery of the Church of Christ is mirrored and given new life. May she, the Handmaid of the Lord, be an example of humble and generous acceptance of the will of God. May she, the Sorrowful Mother at the foot of the Cross, comfort the sufferings and dry the tears of those in distress because of the difficulties of their families.

May Christ the Lord, the Universal King, the King of Families, be present in every Christian home as He was at Cana, bestowing light, joy, serenity and strength. On the solemn day dedicated to His Kingship I beg of Him that every family may generously make its own contribution to the coming of His Kingdom in the world-“a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love, and peace,” [183] towards which history is journeying.

I entrust each family to Him, to Mary, and to Joseph. To their hands and their hearts I offer this Exhortation: may it be they who present it to you, venerable Brothers and beloved sons and daughters, and may it be they who open your hearts to the light that the Gospel sheds on every family.

I assure you all of my constant prayers and I cordially impart the apostolic blessing to each and every one of you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. (Familiaris Consortio, n 86)

May we pray with him now for these graces to be given!

Pro-Life? Do This Easy Thing in 2017                                       December 30, 2016

I’ll never forget briefly getting to know a friend’s son, who was in seminary. Something about his gaze struck me more than anything else: it lacked any trace of trying to obtain something from me. Instead of focusing on achieving personal objectives, he simply befriended me for my own sake. It wasn’t a romantic situation, so as I tried to process why I felt so deeply moved, I suddenly realized: I had experienced the gaze of Christ.
That’s what being pro-life is about. As Cardinal O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., former chair of the bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, once noted, “we discover our worth when we discover our true identity found in the unchangeable, permanent fact that we are created in God’s image and likeness and called to an eternal destiny with him.”
Being pro-life means taking a stand against what Pope Francis calls the “throwaway culture,” which looks out for its own gains, casting people aside as though their lives are not worth living. It means seeing people as Christ sees and loving them as he loves.
Being pro-life is about cherishing and protecting each person and his or her life at every stage and in every circumstance. That’s why the U. S. Catholic bishops are asking us to participate in 9 Days for Life–a digital pilgrimage from January 21-29.
Do you start novenas intending to pray them all the way through, but often forget? There’s an app for that! (You can customize reminders to pray the bishops’ annual, pro-life novena.) Not into apps? You can join the Facebook event (www.goo.gl/UMtYrL), download the novena online, or sign up for daily emails or text messages at 9daysforlife.com.
As part of 9 Days for Life, the bishops are also asking us to share our story with others. You can post a 5-15 second video of why you are participating in 9 Days for Life, how you participated that day, or what being pro-life means to you. Or, print out the customizable sign, fill it in, and post a selfie with the sign. (Find the sign by clicking on the “Share” button at 9daysforlife.com.) When sharing the video or picture, use the hashtag #9DaysforLife; if you’re posting on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, be sure to tag @USCCB–we might share your post!
Other creative suggestions for participating can be found at www.9daysforlife.com. For example, consider having an informal Coffee and Conversation (www.goo.gl/qK7PEF) to discuss some of the topics referenced in the novena, or host a potluck with friends and pray one day of the novena together after the meal.
A leaders’ toolkit is available with free, quick, and easy-to-use materials to help parishes, clergy, press, and Catholic high schools share the merciful message of life not only from January 21-29, but also throughout the year. To access, click the “Leaders’ Toolkit” button on www.9daysforlife.com.
Sign up now at www.9DaysforLife.com to be moved by mercy, and to share with others the joyful truth that every life is worth living. Sometimes all it takes is simply stopping long enough to really see someone.

I carry my Son Jesus to you!

St. Thomas a Becket

Today we hear the account of Jesus’ Presentation in the Temple. It is a wonderful moment in the lives of Jesus and Mary. I hear echoes of it in the message given to us on Christmas Day. Our Lady carried Jesus, her Son, into the Temple to present Him to the Priests, and she carries Jesus to us as well. Simeon and Ana opened their hearts to receive Jesus that day, and Our Lady asks us to open our hearts and receive him as well. Simeon and Ana both had experienced the long wait for the Messiah, and Our Lady tells us not to lose hope but keep our gaze and our heart always directed towards heaven and eternity as we wait for Jesus as they did. Simeon and Ana were open to God and His plans, and Our Lady wants us to also be open, ready to respond to the Holy Spirit for the sake of His plans.

Here is the Gospel:

When the days were completed for their purification
according to the law of Moses,
the parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem
to present him to the Lord,
just as it is written in the law of the Lord,
Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,
and to offer the sacrifice of
a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,
in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.
This man was righteous and devout,
awaiting the consolation of Israel,
and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit
that he should not see death
before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.
He came in the Spirit into the temple;
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus
to perform the custom of the law in regard to him,
he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:

“Lord, now let your servant go in peace;
your word has been fulfilled:
my own eyes have seen the salvation
which you prepared in the sight of every people,
a light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.”

The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;
and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,
“Behold, this child is destined
for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted
(and you yourself a sword will pierce)
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:2-35)

May we not lose hope and keep our gaze and our hearts on Heaven and eternity! May we be open to God’s plans all our days! And may we always open our hearts to receive Jesus!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

Women's Rights Without Frontiers | Forced Abortion Is Not A Choice | www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org

Women’s Rights Without Frontiers is thrilled to announce that our president, Reggie Littlejohn, has been named keynote speaker of the Walk for Life, West Coast. 50,000 people are expected to march at noon on January 21 in San Francisco.

Littlejohn stated, “It is a great honor to be given the opportunity to speak in this powerful venue on behalf of the women and babies of China. I thank Eva Muntean and the other organizers of the Walk for embracing international issues. Something few people realize is that the Chinese Communist Party boasts that it has “prevented” 400 million lives through its brutal One Child Policy. That’s greater than the entire populations of the United States and Canada combined. And too many of these lives were “prevented” by forced abortion. Millions of girls have been selectively aborted and abandoned as well. These issues continue under the Two-Child Policy as well. The greatest hemorrhage of human life in the world is flowing out of China today.”

Littlejohn will be joined by fellow keynote speakers Pam Tebow, mother of Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow, Melissa Ohden, survivor of a failed saline abortion, and Rev. Childress, founder of Black Genocide.org.

Please join Reggie and 50,000 others at the Walk for Life West Coast 2017!

YES, I WANT TO HELP END GENDERCIDE AND FORCED ABORTION IN CHINA!

Your donation enables Women’s Rights Without Frontiers to continue to be a voice for the voiceless women and children of China. This huge effort comes at a cost. We need your support. Please give as generously as you can. Every donation makes a difference!
