THE CATHOLIC VOTE IS SPLIT

Too bad. If united, Catholics could control the outcome of the election, protect the Church and move the country in a direction more attuned to the values of the Church. But we are split between Catholics who deem the sanctity of life as the pre-eminent issue (conservatives) and those for whom care for the poor, the vulnerable and the stranger among us is the more cogent concern (progressives). But there is an issue that should unite us. If ignored then both groups face persecution and neither will be free to carry out their mission.

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING ACTUAL CASES

1) The Little Sisters of the Poor just want to take care of old people and practice their faith. Yet there are people in this country who would rather prevent them from doing the former than let them do the latter.
2) Catholic Social Services in Massachusetts took care of orphans for over one hundred years, but there are people who put them out of business rather than let them practice their faith which required not placing orphans with gay couples.
3) There are people who preferred to see Catholic Charities stop providing aid to refugees rather than let them do so without also providing contraception and abortion.
4) There are people who preferred to see a county clerk in Kentucky thrown in jail rather than figure out how to let her do her job in such a way as not to be cooperating with what she believed and what the Catholic Church teaches is grave sin.
5) There are people who have chosen to drive bakers in Washington out of business rather than allow them to commit the same “crime” of not cooperating with sin.
6) There are people who would rather see a military chaplain disciplined than let him provide spiritual advice that is not politically correct.
7) There are people who fired a football coach rather than let him pray voluntarily after a football game.
8) There are people who want men to be free to go into girls and women’s bathrooms and locker rooms.
9) And there are people who not only want to be free to kill babies until the moment of birth, and even during birth, but want all of us to pay for it.

A TWO PART PATTERN THAT’S HARD TO MISS

1) In each case above the Church and the faithful (both conservatives and progressives) are being prevented from carrying out their mission; and 2) The people who are taking away these freedoms all belong to the same political party. If you know which party that is, it proves the point.

Shouldn’t the issue of the freedom of the Church to carry out its mission and of the faithful to practice their religion in public be the preeminent concern for all Catholic voters and indeed all true Christians and Americans? We have every reason to unite in opposition to the easy to identify people who are perpetrating these injustices. If we don’t unite against these attacks by voting these people out of office, then we and our Church will soon no longer have the freedom to either battle the wanton destruction of human life called abortion, or to care for the poor, the vulnerable and the stranger among us.

YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE A CHURCH TO GO TO IF YOU DON’T VOTE THE RIGHT WAY IN NOVEMBER

Father Michael Orsi of St. Agnes Parish in Naples Florida and former chaplain of Ave Maria Law School, in reminding pastors that they are allowed to be political in church and in urging them to “speak truth to power”, told them, “You might not have a church to go to if you don’t vote the right way in November.” Was he exaggerating or was he right? Can we afford to vote the wrong way, or not vote at all, and find out?

We are at a “precarious moment in our history” when churches must speak truth to power or risk the loss of a lot more than their tax statuses, former Ave Maria Law School chaplain Father Michael Orsi said in a blistering speech at a National Day of Remembrance for Aborted
Children event on September 10.

The California Prolife Council, Sacramento’s branch of National Right to Life, has published a list of congressional and state legislative candidates to vote for, endorsement of presidential candidate, and a special recommendation on three state initiatives to vote against.

No surprise that the council has endorsed Donald Trump and Mike Pence for national office. The three initiatives picked for special opposition are 52, 55, and 56, supported by Planned Parenthood. “Each one of these initiatives increases the money that flows into the taxpayer subsidized abortion industry.”

The state assembly and senate candidates are marked with YES and NO. State senator Toni Atkins, former abortion clinic manager from San Diego, is marked NO-NO.

Deacon John,

Lots of good news today … including babies saved in Ireland!

Last week, we passed along short notes from some of our busy local 40 Days for Life leaders about lives spared from abortion.

Many of you said that really encouraged you to keep going, so … we’re doing it again!

In each of these places, people prayed – and God answered:

FRESNO, CALIFORNIA: A volunteer met a couple walking out of Planned Parenthood. They told her that they decided not to have an abortion. Her presence there, praying for them, caused them to change their minds.

COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND: Two saves! God be praised! Your prayers make a difference.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA: Only two clients arrived this morning and one already left! A couple had been referred to get an abortion due to mom’s health issues.

ROANOKE, VIRGINIA: We have at least one confirmed baby saved. There are two other volunteers working with two other moms and families to help them choose life as well.

The Nevada state rally saw a fabulous turnout of hope-filled prayer volunteers on the narrow road outside a late term abortion center … with the Stratosphere visible in the background.

image

The people of Las Vegas understand that where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more.

The crowd heard from the director of an extremely busy pregnancy center, which is located on the same road. This center serves about two dozen women on a typical day … and offers about 7 or 8 ultrasounds daily.

image

Also speaking was the senior pastor of a church that shares a property line with the abortion center — which gives the congregation a special sense of urgency to pray and work for this facility’s closure.

The Arizona state rally in Phoenix — the 100th city, in the 40th state, on the UNITED tour — was one of the largest events yet, with more than 300 attendees crowding the street outside a Family Planning Associates abortion center.

State senators Kimberly Yee and Nancy Barto addressed the crowd on behalf of Susan B. Anthony List about the importance of prayer — combined with voting pro-life — at this crucial moment in history.

image

The crowd was inspired by local 40 Days for Life leaders from across Arizona, including Anita Usher, whose story of heroic sacrifice is featured in Chapter 23 of the 40 Days for Life book.

Today it’s on to more stops in Arizona and New Mexico!

Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.

–Psalm 139:16

Gracious God, help us to appreciate the wonder and beauty of Your creation. Help us proclaim on behalf of every one of our fellow human beings, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” May the knowledge that we are intimately known by You shape our lives and actions.

Sts. Simon and Jude

Dear Family of Mary!

“Dear children! Today I am calling you: pray for peace. Leave selfishness and live the messages which I am giving you. Without them, you cannot change your life. By living prayer, you will have peace. By living in peace, you will feel the need to witness, because you will discover God whom you now feel to be far away. Therefore, little children, pray, pray, pray and permit God to enter into your hearts. Return to fasting and confession so as to overcome the evil in you and around you. Thank you for having responded to my call.” October 25, 2016

Our Lady comes to us to bring us peace. This is her mission from the Father. In this message she tells us to pray for peace. But she links our prayer for peace with the renunciation of selfishness. Peace cannot exist in a soul that is grasping, vane and selfish. No matter how much we pray for peace, if we are in the state of selfishness we will not find peace.

St. James also taught us about this opposition between peace and selfishness:

“Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good life let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity. And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” (James 3: 13-18)

“The harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace!” Our Lady is forming us into peacemakers. Our ability to make peace depends on our renunciation of selfishness and our desire for Our Lord, to see Him and follow Him. Our Lady told us about what it is like when we love her Son and seek Him instead of our selves:

“…My children, all those who love my Son can see Him, because His face can be seen through the souls which are filled with love for Him. Therefore, my children, my apostles, listen to me. Leave vanity and selfishness. Do not live only for what is earthly and material. Love my Son and make it so that others may see His face through your love for Him. I will help you to come to know Him all the more. I will speak to you about Him. Thank you. (March 2, 2016)

We may think that giving up our self-concern will leave us vulnerable. But it is really the opposite. The more we leave selfishness and vanity the more secure and safe we will be. We will be seeking Jesus, the One who loves us to the death, who will not leave us alone in trouble but will save us from all our woes. So leaving selfishness is the most secure step we will ever take!!

May we ponder anew this great call from Our Lady to leave selfishness, to let go of what is earthly and material, and turn towards Jesus, who will lead us to the Father and to life!

In Jesus, Mary and Joseph!
