In 1972, Mr. Franciszek Gajowniczek proclaimed his thanks to the recently beatified Maximilian Kolbe for saving his life in Auschwitz. “I want to express my thanks, for the gift of life,” he said to 150,000 attendees. Kolbe’s courageous action spoke volumes about how he cherished human life, made in the image and likeness of God.

In the opening lines of his Confessions, St. Augustine famously writes, addressing our Lord, “For Thou hast made us for Thyself and our hearts are restless till they rest in Thee” (trans. F.J. Sheed). In one sentence, Augustine summarizes the longings of the human heart and the purpose of life: man is not made for this world, because he is destined for union with God and to experience the Beatific Vision for all eternity.

When young couples become engaged and married, they need to realize that from many points of view, marriage has certain “impossibles” that will come their way, sometimes called “rough patches”, caused by many different trials interiorly and exteriorly. These trials make fidelity, indissolubility, openness to life and love, heavy burdens that prima facie are not “light”, in seeming contradiction to our Lord’s words who asks us to come to Him for His “yoke is easy.”

It looks all so official, proper, formal, and stately. A complex issue goes before The Supreme Court. Wise men are asked to use their formal education, knowledge of the law, and their wide human experience to determine the justice or injustice of an important matter. No one would ever presume that a court of law in a free country shaped by Christian civilization would legalize the killing of innocent children-an unprecedented law that no civilized nation in the course of history has ever adopted. How could a blatant, egregious evil be approved, justified, rationalized, and applauded as enlightened thinking?
