Your Support Helps HLI Defend Life & Family Around the World!
Dear deaconjohn,
It has been another very busy week for the HLI family, for many reasons. I am with Dr. Brian Clowes in Hawaii sharing the Gospel of Life at the invitation of the Diocese of Honolulu’s Pro-Life Office and Bishop Larry Silva.

Our very kind hosts have kept us busy and well cared for. The “Catholics Reaffirming Life” symposium has been wonderful: We began with a day of teaching priests, religious, and deacons on Oahu, and we will repeat the program for these groups and laity over the remainder of our eight day mission, traveling to various islands.

Along with the great weather, the faithful here have lifted our hearts at a very difficult time.

We have gone another week without a clarification from the Holy See on the unchangeable nature of our beloved Church’s teaching on contraception. The ripple effects continue as well: the media seems affirmed in its claim that the Church has changed its position. A statement has come from the Philippines adding to the confusion. There remains an appearance of division in the Church on this key teaching, as Latin American  bishops who have defended the Church’s teaching during the panic surrounding the spread of the Zika virus seem to be on their own.

Each time HLI has responded in love and in truth. And we are not alone: LifeSiteNews has gathered several statements  from organizations and thinkers that reaffirm the Church’s position. Especially notable was a passionate statement from pro-life champion Jill Stanek, who is not Catholic, but who realizes that the Church’s teaching on contraception is essential to shore up the fight against abortion. And the National Catholic Bioethics Center has also published an excellent review of the Church’s teaching on contraception as it pertains to the Zika panic.

We are not alone. Like many others, including many reading this letter, we at HLI accepted the mission to step out into the world and joyfully defend the most vulnerable using the unchangeable teaching of the Church on life. We believed — and still believe — that the truth about the human person as revealed by Christ is best taught in the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. We believe that every human problem, large or small, has at its foundation the act of turning away from God and His law, and that the Church gives us in every age the guidance to understand our times and turn back toward Him.

It is our deepest desire to serve the Church and the Holy Father, which is why we will remain in the Truth of Christ. We can do no other. We do this in complete and obedient service to the Church and her Magisterium.

Yet it is hard to communicate just how serious this situation is to everyone. A month ago, really the entire history of the Church, a priest like me could stand in front of a class and say with complete confidence that the Church teaches that it is never morally licit for married couples to use contraception. People may have disagreed, but the priest could explain logically from Church teaching and sources like Theology of the Body exactly how this is a foundational teaching for marriage and family. Now, this teaching has not changed in the least, but confusion is rampant. Today I can stand in front of a class full of faithful people — those who have no desire to dissent from the Church but don’t necessarily know what to make out of the news reports following Pope Francis’ return flight from Mexico — and say the same truth, and people wonder if what I am saying is only intended for certain times or situations.

We are grateful that you are standing with us during this difficult time. The truth does not change, therefore the Church’s teaching on contraception will not change. We redouble our efforts first in prayer, imploring the intercession of Saint John Paul II, Blessed Paul VI, and all the saints who found themselves standing joyfully as a sign of contradiction against a world that seems bent on self-destruction.

Peace and strength, my brothers and sisters! Our Church needs us now.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Shenan J. Boquet

In light of these doctrinal teachings, it is difficult to understand the reference to the use of contraception as “a lesser evil,” as compared with abortion. This may be the case, but it is morally irrelevant, since the same teachings that engage this question reaffirm that an evil may never be chosen that a good might come from it. These doctrinal truths cannot be changed by a statement made in a press release or interview. Church doctrine clearly allows married couples, with consciences formed in the truth, to use natural methods (fertility awareness/ periodic abstinence) to postpone pregnancy for serious reasons (CC 53, HV 14). – continue –

HLI condemns the unjust and ironically-named “Anti-Discriminatory Ordinance for People of Diverse Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity or Expression (SOGIE)”, approved by the Mandaue City Council earlier this month. Whatever the intention of those who approved it, this ordinance utilizes language now routinely invoked to persecute Christians worldwide. We have seen several Christian-owned businesses fined into closure, business owners’ lives threatened, public figures forced to resign – all merely for their failure to keep silent and celebrate the redefinition of marriage and the LGBT lifestyle. – continue –

40 Days for Life

Dear Deacon John,

It’s no secret that spiritual warfare can go on outside an abortion facility. Sometimes, it can be pretty obvious. But at other times, it can be a more subtle distraction.

It can often come in the form of a quick shout from a passing driver. “Get a life!” and “Get a job!” and “Do something useful!” are commonly heard.

Of course, you are doing something useful.

So don’t worry about it! Just smile, brush it off … and keep on praying!

Manchester, New Hampshire

It was five below zero and windy as the two volunteers prayed in front of Planned Parenthood. The peaceful mood was broken when a woman slowed down her car, rolled down the window, and shouted, “Don’t you have something better to do?”

“We didn’t have to think twice about the answer,” said Stephen in Manchester.

“During the first two weeks of our campaign, two mothers and their children have already been saved, and we have no idea how many hearts have been changed through our daily prayer and witness,” he said. “We don’t have something better to do.”

The mothers, babies and abortion workers all need your prayers, he said. “Can you please donate some of your time … and peacefully pray in front of Planned Parenthood?

Orlando, Florida

One of the counselors in front of Planned Parenthood was able to strike up a conversation with a young woman who accepted information about community resources.

The volunteer offered to take her to the pregnancy help center, but she said her mother could give her a ride. But first, she was going into Planned Parenthood.

As she turned to go in, the counselor suggested that she hide the list of resources she was given. Other women had reported that the center’s staff had yanked the paper from their hands, while telling them they didn’t need it.

The young woman’s mom tried her best to ignore the vigil participants. After quite some time, she went inside to get her daughter. When they came out, the daughter told the volunteers they were headed to the pregnancy help center – and that she was keeping her baby.

Mexico City, Mexico

The campaign in Mexico City’s Roma area began with a group of more than 50 … and strong encouragement from a local pastor that they work as missionaries of the Gospel of Life.

Lourdes, the Mexico City leader, said that in spite of cooler-than-usual weather, they continue to stand in front of the Marie Stopes abortion center, “praying and showing the mercy of God.”

The volunteers have seen a number of couples arrive … stop for a time right in front of the abortion business … and leave. “We hope those will be lives saved from abortion,” she said.

Media reports are accusing the vigil participants of harassment … which of course is simply not true. Lourdes said it is obvious that the pro-abortion side does not want them outside Marie Stopes. “They know prayer is powerful.”

Here’s today’s devotional from Randolph Sly of the National Pro-life Religious Council.

Day 18 intention

We pray for a flowering of the joy of parenthood.

Scripture

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; they shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate.

— Psalm 127:3-5

Reflection from Randolph Sly

I still vividly remember the day my first child was born. As she came into the world I gazed upon the most beautiful little baby I’d ever seen.

Later I was driving home from the hospital for a shower and a fresh change of clothes when a song came on the radio, “The Men in My Little Girl’s Life” — a ballad about being a father as he watches his daughter grow through childhood to womanhood.

I wept as I listened, knowing those years would go by very fast… and they did.

Being a father, whenever I read the Psalm quoted above I’m always captivated by one word – “heritage.” It basically means “something passed down from a preceding generation.”

That little girl I watched being born and wept for is not mine to give to God like a product of our fertility, but rather His, which he has entrusted to us. So are all her siblings.

My wife and I share a great treasure: precious lives, which are placed in our lineage that His life with us might be perpetuated.

To the psalmist, this was a blessing from the Lawgiver, God Himself, who blessed Israel with another generation intended to continue their covenantal promise.

For us in Christ, it is his gift of succeeding generations for His Church and her families.

These days I’m looking upon my grandchildren, and rejoicing that my children and their spouses will pass on the greatness of Christ’s gospel to them and thus will continue the work of God in the world. What a blessing. What a heritage!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please keep me from taking for granted the gift of children. Help us to remember this heritage that you have given us. Make us faithful stewards of these precious lives, that each generation might be raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Madonna Della Strada — the Italian for  “Our Lady of the Road” — is the name of an image of the  Madonna and Child enshrined at the Church of the Gesu, mother church of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in Rome.

In all likelihood, the image of Our Lady of the Road dates from the middle of the 13th or the first half of the 14th century. The artist is unknown. It was originally located in a small chapel named “Our Lady of the Road” at the same location. This chapel was the first church entrusted to the Jesuits at the time of Saint Ignatius. The first Jesuits often prayed before this fresco of Our Lady.

The Jesuits built their first house, where Ignatius and his companions lodged, next to the chapel of “Our Lady of the Road.” Today, you can still visit the rooms inhabited by Saint Ignatius. This is where the saint wrote the Constitutions of the Society.

February 26 – Blessed Virgin Meschecia (Russia, 1492)

The Mother of Mercy watches over each and every one of us

When Mary was standing near the cross of Jesus, she reached the full measure of her vocation as Mother of Mercy. On Golgotha, we discover her unique place in salvation history.

We evoke this unique place she holds every time we say the Hail Mary, when we ask her to pray for us “now and at the hour of our death,” in the same way that she was there at the time of the death of Jesus

Whenever we utter these words, even if we do not think about them precisely, the Virgin Mary hears them.

The Mother of Mercy watches over the destiny of each and every one of us and the only thing that is expected of us is to leave the door of our heart—the door of our “yes”—open.

It doesn’t take a physicist to figure out that our planet is collapsing under the weight of a culture steeped in gook! It’s like quicksand; it sucks you in before you know what’s happening.

If you think this statement is merely bologna, think again! Take a look at some recent news items to see what I mean.
