Caritas Community New Years 2014

Caritas Community New Years 2014/2015 at the Cross on Penitentiary Mountain, sending up their prayers by lighting sky lanterns, and watching their prayers and the lanterns go up to the heavens…

Every year, the Caritas Community gathers in prayer to transition in the new year. This is a tradition that the founder of Caritas began with his family before the Community was started. When you gather for a holy purpose, you not only receive the grace of prayer, but, God also gives you joy, for you will never experience togetherness like you can when you gather for a holy reason in prayer. It is like Medjugorje visionary Ivan said about prayer groups, a principle that is true for any relationship, that you grow closer to each other by praying together, than by talking to each other.

While many spend their New Year’s eve in party“ing” in a worldly way, Our Lady is showing in Her messages to be memory“ing” these moments in prayer. Our Lady of Medjugorje said on December 31, 1984:

“When you hear the bells at midnight, you will fall on your knees, bow your head to the ground so that the King of Peace will come. This year I will offer my peace to the world. But afterwards, I will ask you where you were when I offered you my peace.”

We are being offered Mercy this year. Tonight, New Year’s Eve, in this Year of Mercy, think of when 2016 ends. Will you have memoried this evening tonight in a holy way? The founder of Caritas, his family and the Caritas Community will be remembering all of you in prayer tonight as we memory this moment together in prayer and love.

Catherine Labouré was born in 1806 into a large family of well-to-do farmers from Burgundy, in France. Around the age of 14 she began to consider a religious vocation, but had to face the persistent opposition of her father. She was eventually able to enter the Daughters of Charity at the age of 23. In April 1830, Catherine arrived at the mother house of the Rue du Bac in Paris to start her novitiate.

As early as July 1830, she revealed to her confessor that she had received apparitions of Our Lady: the Virgin Mary appeared to her, with beams of light flowing out of her open hands, illuminating the globe on which she stood. She asked Catherine to have a medal made and distributed everywhere, bearing her image and the special invocation: “O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”

On the day she died Catherine asked to have 63 children recite each invocation of the Litany of Our Lady from the Office of the Immaculate Conception, at her bedside… Catherine saw in the number 63 an illustration of the oral tradition that gave the age of 63 to the Virgin: fifteen years before and after the thirty-three years of Christ’s life.

Dear Family of Mary!
 
October 25, 2014 “Dear children! Pray in this time of grace and seek the intercession of all the saints who are already in the light. From day to day may they be an example and encouragement to you on the way of your conversion. Little children, be aware that your life is short and passing. Therefore, yearn for eternity and keep preparing your hearts in prayer. I am with you and intercede before my Son for each of you, especially for those who have consecrated themselves to me and to my Son. Thank you for having responded to my call.”
 
Tonight we say good bye to another year. So much has happened during 2015. Many trials have come upon the world, but also many graces have been given. We know that God is with us, that Our Lady is by our side, and that good will win. Our Lady has told us so.
 
As we enter 2016, many of us enter into prayer, putting God is the first place in our lives and in this New Year. We can take part in a beautiful tradition tonight or tomorrow, that of asking the Lord to give us a saint as a companion for this New Year! It is a wonderful tradition! Each year we are given a new saint to be our guide and protector. Year after year these saints gather around us, praying for us and encouraging us to holiness. We experience their companionship and it is a comfort.
 
St. Faustina’s community observed this tradition. One year she wrote:
 
Jesus likes to intervene in the smallest details of our life, and He often fulfills secret wishes of mine that I sometimes hide from Him, although I know that from Him nothing can be hidden.
 
There is a custom among us of drawing by lot, on New Year’s Day, special Patrons for ourselves for the whole year. In the morning during meditation, there arose within me a secret desire that the Eucharistic Jesus be my special Patron for this year also, as in the past. But, hiding this desire from my Beloved, I spoke to Him about everything else but that. When we came to refectory for breakfast, we blessed ourselves and began drawing our patrons. When I approached the holy cards on which the names of the patrons were written, without hesitation I took one, but I didn’t read the name immediately (152) as I wanted to mortify myself for a few minutes. Suddenly, I heard a voice in my soul: I am your patron. Read. I looked at once at the inscription and read, “Patron for the Year 1935 – the Most Blessed Eucharist.” My heart leapt with joy, and I slipped quietly away from the sisters and went for a short visit before the Blessed Sacrament, where I poured out my heart. But Jesus sweetly admonished me that I should be, at that moment, together with the sisters. I went immediately in obedience to the rule. (360 Diary)

Saint Faustina understood how very much Jesus was listening to her every desire when she received Him as her saint for the year! What a confirmation of the nearness of God!! We too will find consolation when we pick our saints for this coming year. The Lord knows just how to show us He is listening to our hearts and is answering our secret prayers.

Dear Friends
I wonder how many have heard about the strange “condom controversy” underway in Kenya.

It began when Doctor Nelson Muiru of the National AIDS Control Council made a strange series of claims. He admits that his organization is in possession of a banner that was stolen from Human Life International’s Kenyan affiliate, adding that the NACC will remove any other such banners placed in public places. Yet, NACC Regional Director Muiru also tells reporters “I heard they are saying we confiscated their banner, that is not the case we are just holding it.”

We had hoped that the journalists of Kenya would have a field day with this, yet it has only been challenged by our affiliate. When an official like Dr. Muiru feels free to openly contradict himself in public, he expects some help from the media in covering it up.

Nor is this the NACC’s only contradiction. The more serious one has to do with Dr. Muiru’s odd statement: “We have made a great step towards achieving ‘Zero Infection’ but the church seems to be pulling us back to 1980s. We won’t allow this to happen anywhere in this country.”

The message on the stolen banner is completely factual, a graphic representation of the condom producers’ own admission and other researchers’ well known claim that, on average, one in twelve condoms fails. There is little factual debate over this, as Dr. Muiru and every knowledgeable public health journalist know. And if one in twelve condoms is likely to fail, how safe will you feel using one if you are with a person who has Aids? Should you feel safe?

Would you eat at a restaurant if every twelfth customer was poisoned?

Dr. Muiru’s continued employment with the NACC depends on you answering “yes” to these questions. A large part of his job is to get as many Kenyans as possible to feel “safe” using a product with a one-in-twelve failure rate, even when the failure of the product can lead to death. His agency, as every knowledgeable public health journalist in Kenya knows but has yet to report, receives a great deal of its funding from Western sources – the exact same groups who think that there are too many Africans and that “overpopulation” threatens the lifestyle of “elites” in the West.

Dr. Muiru knows that the HIV/Aids pandemic began not because people followed the ancient and very well-known position of the Catholic Church: that sex should occur only within the exclusive, lifelong, sacramental union of marriage between one man and one woman. Indeed, if men and women only had sexual relations with one person their entire life, every scientist knows that the disease would never have been able to spread. The disease was spread by those who clearly rejected this teaching and chose multiple sexual partners. Every epidemiologist knows this is true, yet they continue to blame the Church for the actions of those who reject Church teaching.

So Dr. Muiru’s most serious contradiction is not his nonsensical claim that his organization did not confiscate the banner that it now possesses and will not return. His most serious contradiction is in his propaganda that would have Kenyans feel “safe” using a product that fails, on average, with every twelfth use. Further, his attempt to blame the Church for the actions of those who obviously rejected Church teaching is common but flagrantly dishonest. Like his Western funders, he needs a “bad guy” to campaign against, even if he has to grossly misrepresent the facts. If he fails, he may well lose his job, and his sponsors will find someone who is better at getting Kenyans to feel safe as they engage in risky behavior with inadequate protection.

Our affiliate has gladly offered to hold a debate with Dr. Muiru and see if he can publicly address why he is telling Kenyans that they should feel safe using a product that fails as often as condoms do. They also hope to discuss the sources of funding, which are not listed on the NACC’s web site, but are easy enough to find with a basic web search. Let us discuss the incredible reversal of HIV infection rate in Uganda in the 1990s as the emphasis was shifted from a condoms-first policy to one of abstinence and fidelity, and why, as condoms are again being given priority in Uganda, their HIV infection rate is again on the rise.

By all means, let us have this conversation, even if the journalists of Kenya will not cover both sides of this very strange story. Our affiliate, their perspective mostly ignored in the press, has taken to the streets with their message of responsibility and chastity as the best way forward for a nation that wants to flourish.
Let us also further discuss all that the Catholic Church has done for Aids victims all over Africa, with corporal works of mercy performed by those whose love for Jesus Christ moves them naturally and joyfully to serve those most in need. These heroes see the on-the-ground truth of what sadly happens when the Church’s prophetic moral and social doctrines are ignored and hidden,  even as the Church is blamed for not accommodating the pathologies of the mainstream culture.

We must be unafraid to proclaim that sin – including sexual sin – has eternal consequences for those who do not repent and turn back toward God. That these same sins have destructive earthly consequences will not surprise anyone who knows that we were made by the same loving Creator who created all of nature, who Himself continues to call us to accept his mercy and forgiveness if we will only seek it out and act accordingly, in truth.

Suddenly, the Virgin began to move 
Santa Maria presso San Celso (Holy Mary near San Celso) is the most popular shrine in Milan, Italy. It became well-known in 395, when the body of the martyr Saint Nazarius was found intact in Tre Mori Cemetery near Milan.

The bishop himself carried the body to the new basilica, then he returned to Tre Mori to pray at the place where, according to tradition, another martyr named Celsus was buried. Celsus was a young lad from Nice who chose to follow Nazarius. He was killed at the same time as Nazarius during the persecutions of Nero (d.68).

The martyr’s tomb was placed under the altar—the fourth-century sarcophagus is still kept in the shrine. Later, the bishop had an image of the Madonna and Child painted in a niche at the back of the church, protected by a metal screen.

In 1485, on December 30th, a priest named Father Pietro Porro was celebrating Mass in the packed church, when the image of the Virgin began to move. She lifted her veil, opened her arms and clasped her hands together. The Child Jesus also appeared to be making a gesture of blessing towards the faithful. The numerous testimonies, still conserved in the archives of the shrine, allowed for ecclesiastical approval to be granted within a few months of this event.

Dear children! All these years that God permits me to be with you are a sign of the immeasurable love which God has for each one of you and a sign of how much God loves you. Little children, how many graces the Most High has given to you and how many graces he desires to give to you. But, little children, your hearts are closed and live in fear, and do not permit Jesus to have His love and His peace overcome your hearts and to begin to reign in your lives. To live without God means to live in darkness and never to come to know the Father’s love and His care for each of you. Therefore, little children, today in a special way pray to Jesus that as of today your life may experience a new birth in God and become a light which will radiate from within you, and thus that you may become witnesses of God’s presence in the world to every person who lives in darkness. Little children, I love you and daily intercede before the Most High for you. Thank you for having responded to my call. (December 25, 2015 Jakov)


“But, little children, your hearts are closed and live in fear…”
 
Here is what Jesus said to St. Faustina about fear, and how she responded:
 
[May 1937]. Corpus Christi.
During prayer, I heard these words: My daughter, let your heart be filled with joy. I, the Lord, am with you. Fear nothing. You are in My heart. At that moment, I knew the great majesty of God, and I understood that nothing could be compared with one single perception of God. Outward greatness dwindles like a speck of dust before one act of a deeper knowledge of God.

The Lord has poured such a depth of peace into my soul that nothing will disturb it any more. Despite everything that goes on around me, I am not deprived of my peace for a moment. Even if the whole world were crumbling, it would not disturb the depth of the silence which is within me and in which God rests. All events, all the various things which happen are under His foot.
 
This deeper knowledge of God gives me full liberty and spiritual freedom, and nothing can disturb my close union with Him, not even the angelic powers. I feel that I am great when I am united to God. What happiness it is to have the consciousness of God in one’s heart and to live in close intimacy with Him. (1133,34,35 Diary)

I believe St. Faustina experienced exactly what Our Lady desire for us. She lived without fear, because she was in deep unity with Jesus, filled with His light and living in total trust.

May we become fearless, joy-filled Christians, ready to share the peace we have with everyone!
