clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends For Life,

[International Protect Life Award For Chile] – Over 30 NGO leaders active at the United Nations praised Chile for having the lowest maternal mortality rate in all of Latin America. In a communication to President Pinera announcing the group's decision to designate its International Protect Life Award to the people of Chile, the leaders celebrated that more Chilean women have safely delivered their babies than ever before. The committee announced the award at the UN during the 2011 Meeting of the UN Commission on Status of Women, and emphasized the importance the UN places on reducing maternal mortality within the UN Millennium Development Goals. The leaders also referenced the ways Chile, through its constitution and other programs, provided for care and protection of the child before birth. Specifically mentioned was that the "Chile Crece Contigo" ("Chile Grows With You") program begun by former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet and meant to advocate for the well-being and protection of young children, has always included strong awareness that the unborn child is a member of the family. Also mentioned by the NGO leaders was the new "Comprometidos por la Vida" ("Committed to Life") program announced by President Pinera to offer assistance to pregnant women in difficult circumstances in order to carry their babies to term.

[Austria – In-Vitro Ban Upheld] – The controversy in Austria over the legalization of in-vitro fertilization reached the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights. After consideration, it has recently delivered its final judgment, i.e. that the European Court upholds Austria's earlier ban on in-vitro fertilization. This is good news for babies.

God Bless,
Fr. Jerry Novotny, OMI

(The Difference is LIFE) "Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge which is power; religion gives man wisdom which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals. They are complementary. Science keeps religion from sinking into the valley of crippling irrationalism and paralyzing obscurantism. Religion prevents science from falling into the marsh of obsolete materialism and moral nihilism." – Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

(Must-Watch Video): "The Con" –  This popped up over the weekend and is making the rounds of the interwebs. Take a couple minutes and watch – and then send it around. It comes from Americans United for Life.

ITEM #1: Killing babies no different from abortion, experts say

Parents should be allowed to have their newborn babies killed because they are "morally irrelevant" and ending their lives is no different to abortion, a group of medical ethicists linked to Oxford University has argued.

ITEM #2: A Raindrop in Winter

What is a life well-lived? A life filled with honor, loyalty, honesty, industriousness, faithfulness and love. A life of service and kindness for the poorest of the poor. A life defending and protecting those who are weak and defenseless. A life nurturing those who are growing up. A life achieving and building things whether great or simple, producing wonderful services and products, exemplifying excellence in achievement. These are the heroes and saints: these exemplify the great qualities of a truly successful life.

ITEM #3: HIV Infection Increases Risk Of Brain Shrinkage

Results from a small study indicate that certain regions of the brain become significantly smaller in people with HIV. The findings also show that this reduction in brain size occurs even when the HIV infection is well controlled with antiretroviral therapy.

ITEM #4: I'm Committed to Abstinence, Virgin is Not a Dirty Word

I personally believe that the best way for a child to come into the world is being born to two people who are married – that is, committed to one another in the eyes of God and man. Therefore, I decided, to paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi, that I was going to be the change I wished to see in the world. I was going to put my money where my mouth was and stop engaging in baby-making activities until I was in the situation I felt was best for baby-having activities.

ITEM #5: Mother: There's Nothing "Down" About Down Syndrome!

If you are blessed to have been chosen to have a baby with "UP" Syndrome, or you know someone who has… SMILE! It's the best thing that will ever happen to you. It's a shame that our society and doctors are blind to this.

ITEM #6: Gandhi: What He Believed About Sex, Marriage and Birth Control

Mahatma Gandhi's views on human sexuality are not what you would expect from a hero of the Left.

ITEM #7 Morally Tainted: Products Made Possible by the Killing of Innocent Human Life

It is time Catholics and pro-lifers demand disclosure for any drug, treatment, vaccine, food or any other product that has used cells from an elective abortion in its development or production. And then we need to object and demand companies use alternatives. Without our loud and continuous pressure, the use of aborted fetal tissue to bring products to market will not only continue, it will expand. We live in a culture of death – a reality that means we truly do need labels that warn consumers: "This product was made possible by the killing of innocent human life."

ITEM #8: Ethics paper advances "After-birth abortion"; Outrage grows

A recent paper, "After-birth abortion: why should the baby live?", appears in the electronic version of the Journal of Medical Ethics and deserves careful scrutiny as it uses pro-abortion arguments to support infanticide. This disturbing concept asserts that children in the womb and newborns are both "potential persons" and that the lives of both can be ended for the same reasons.

ITEM #9: Do Mothers Matter?

How surrogacy and egg donation, which first gained national attention in the 1980s, are bringing into the world a class of children beset by confusion, depression, and loss.

ITEM #10: Meet the "Immortality Medicine" of the Futurists and Transhumanists

[About Living Longer]

[Immortality In Our Lifetime]

[Note:  You now have a name and a face. Take a look at this website and note all the connections – if you dare. Understand that for such gnostics (including "transhumanists" and "futurists"), they fail to also tell you that for them "immortality" ultimately requires the destruction of the cosmos and everything and everyone in it so that the "pieces" of the ultimate deity (the All, the One, etc.) in things can move back up through the cosmic spheres and fuse back with the original deity from which they emanated (called the "in-gathering of the Light") – thus they are ultimately a-cosmic. For gnostic basics academically presented see article by Hans Jonas in the Encyclopedia of Philosophy, quoted in full in my article: GNOSTICISM, the Heretical Gnostic Writings, and 'Judas'" (April 9, 2006).

See also my following articles:

"Historic roots of human genetic engineering: REASON, Duke, and parahuman reproduction – 1972" (July 11, 2004).

"'Gnostic Soup'": Pagan fertility gods, IVF, Hollywood, cloning/genetic engineering, bioethics, transhumanism, libertarians, drugs, eugenics, etc." (Nov. 7, 2005).

"Analysis: Stearns' Congressional Human Cloning Fairy Tale 'Ban'; New Age and Transhumanist Legislation for 'Converging Technologies'?" (Sept. 8, 2004).

"PLATO'S "ROYAL LIES": State Authorized Eugenics, Communism, Utilitarianism, Euthanasia, Physician Assisted Suicide, "Mother Earth" Myth, Day Care Nurseries, Women in the Military, and Population Control" (August 3, 2004).

Gnosticism is pantheistic (reality is only one connected whole), polytheistic (many gods/goddesses), anti-Christian, anti-semitic, anti-natural law, pro population control, and a fairy tale of astronomical proportions. I rest my case. – DNI]

ITEM #11: Grading Bishops

In a recent article I asked: "What are the measurables by which we should judge the 'effectiveness' of a bishop?" I received several answers from the staff and from readers (see below). I hope you will take time to absorb these interesting and varied reflections! Additional reader views are available in Sound Off at the foot of the original article.

ITEM #12: The Tyranny of Misunderstood Freedom

Everyone says freedom is a good thing. Christ promised it. America is based on it. Libertarians and libertines want it. Even the Chinese call their armed forces the People's Liberation Army. But what is freedom?
